The Canberra Ornithologists Group (COG) is pleased to be organising the BA Campout in 2011. Location: Scottsdale Reserve is a Bush Heritage Australia owned property of 1328 hectares just 45 minutes drive south of Canberra, ACT and located just off the Monaro Highway approximately four km north of the township of Bredbo. For safety reasons if travelling from Canberra it is necessary to drive to Bredbo, complete a U turn and then drive back on the Monaro Highway. The camping area is then a short distance on a dirt road off the Highway. Scottsdale Reserve protects endangered grassy box woodlands and supports many declining woodland birds including Diamond Firetail, Hooded Robin and Brown Treecreeper. The Murrumbidgee River winds for four km along the property’s northern and western boundaries and protects one of the last intact ecosystems on the river. To find out more log onto http://www.bushheritage.org.au/our_reserves/state_new_south_wales/scottsdale. Activities: The timing of the autumn Campout has been arranged to coincide with the annual honeyeater migration. In addition to the spectacular number of Yellow-faced and White-naped Honeyeaters many other bird species of interest are involved in the passage out of the Brindabella Ranges. Apart from observing the passage, many other activities will be arranged and may include bird tours of Scottsdale, and outings to Namadgi National Park, Tallaganda State Forest, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and the Tinderry Nature Reserve. Opportunities will be provided to become involved in bird surveying for the Kosciusko to Coast (K2C) project. For those intending to spend the weekend in Canberra at the end of the Campout local outings will be provided and may involve visits to the International Arboretum, Australian National Botanic Gardens, Jerrabomberra Wetlands and Mulligan’s Flat Sanctuary. A final program of events will be organised a week or so before the Campout and will be placed on the COG website before the event. Accommodation: Bush camping will be available and campers will need to be self-sufficient. The shearing shed at Scottsdale has been converted to a large open space meeting and dining area. Campfires will not be permitted, water is limited, toilets will be provided but there will be no powered sites. There is good mobile phone reception. The campsite can be reached by 2WD and is accessible for trailers For those wishing to use powered sites the nearest caravan park is at Cooma (Tel 02-64521828) 37 km south of Scottsdale. Limited motel accommodation with associated restaurant can be found at Michelago (Tel 02-359011), 24 km north of Scottsdale on the Monaro Highway.
