The Canberra Ornithologists Group Annotated Checklist
of the Birds of the Australian Capital Territory
This list is based on Birds of the ACT: Two Centuries of Change, by the late Steve Wilson OAM, published by the Canberra Ornithologists Group (COG), Canberra, 1999. It has been compiled by David McDonald, and updated by reports published in COG's Annual Bird Reports, Canberra Bird Notes and other authoritative publications.
In all, 286 species are included on this list. A supplementary list covers an additional 42 species reported in the literature as having been observed in the ACT but not currently regarded as being on the ACT Bird List.
Species marked * are classified as 'Unusual Birds' in the ACT. They are species for which there have been fewer than 10 endorsed records of probably distinct individuals or groups since the formation of the COG Rarities Panel in 1984. Please submit a COG Unusual Bird Report form to the COG Rarities Panel for each observation of these species, and for any species not included on this list.
