The spring breeding survey started on 8 November in mild, calm and overcast conditions, after heavy thunderstorms the night before, but we managed to finish before another round of showers. Fifty-six species were recorded, with some areas very active in birds. This is, however, a low count for spring-possibly influenced by very few waterbirds as this year the cormorants and herons are not breeding, because of breakage of the wall and loss of water from the large dam, yet to be repaired. Ten breeding species were recorded, including Mistletoebird, Varied Sitella and Grey Butcherbird, and there were several sightings of Dollarbirds, a species fairly uncommon at Mulligans. Little Friarbirds and Brown Treecreepers were recorded at one of the usual places in the woodland by the large dam. While there were good numbers of spring migrants such as White-winged trillers, Sacred Kingfishers and both species of gerygones, Rufous Songlarks were completely absent (as they were in September). I would be interested to know if anyone has recorded them at Mulligans this spring.
The final survey for the year will be Sunday 6 December. There may be a night survey the evening before but this will be discussed with available surveyors nearer the time.
