Last year in March COG had a fantastic weekend in the hinterland of the south coast, around 3 hours drive from Canberra, based at the Scrymgeours' property. The highlights were the Sooty Owl in the nearby rainforest and the Sugar Gliders flying down from their sleeping tree in the evenings; 119 species of birds in varied habitats from rainforest to eucalypt forest, lake, shore and wetlands.
Delightful and private grassy camping spots in a bush garden, with some under cover sleeping spots in the shed (some mattresses can be provided), and toilet available. There is a large barbecue and drinking water is available. It's bring everything camping, but in civilised surroundings.
You can arrive on Friday any time, or on Saturday am, or just go down for a day trip on Saturday (you need to arrive very early though to join the group for the day's activities).
On Sunday we will pack up camp and head for Six Mile Creek in the Tantawangalo Forest, then meet Professor Henry Nix to visit the site of the Wog Wog experiment, a long-term study of reserves of various sizes within clear-felled forest (see May Gang-gang). You can return to Canberra via Bombala or Timbarra if you want an extra night.
Bring sturdy shoes and wet weather gear. Please register with Alan and Lyn Scrymgeour (6241 1138). Details of how to get there will be available from them or from Jenny Bounds at COG meetings.
