Report - Googong Foreshores (9 May 1999)

Sixteen people enjoyed the fine mild autumn weather after a foggy start. The cold conditions early supported the theory that it is the larger birds that are active first in cold conditions.

There were plenty of birds seen, with good numbers of some species. A total of 47 different species were recorded. There were some small flocks of migrating honeyeaters, including Red Wattlebirds and Yellow-faced and White-naped honeyeaters. A few White-plumed honeyeaters were also seen. Red Stringybarks in flower may have been an attraction.

Sightings included an immature white-breasted sea eagle gliding along the Queanbeyan River, six Hooded Robins in two groups of three, a couple of Speckled Warblers and some Yellow Thornbills in the trees lining the Queanbeyan River below the dam wall. There were good views of two groups of Grey Currawongs. Waterbirds included two Musk Duck and some Little Pied Cormorants.

Googong Foreshores continues to be a reliable birdwatching venue.
