Report - Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (Sun 9 July 2000)

Five intrepid birders ventured into the cold and rain for the annual visit to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve to observe the Superb Lyrebirds. This being the first lyrebird walk since the publication of Schodde & Mason's Directory, we had the opportunity to note that the Canberra area lyrebirds are of the taxon Menura novaehollandiae victoriae, the Victorian race, rather than the nominate race found near Sydney. Well, it did not rain all the time and the lyrebirds were noticeable-from the superb Lyrebird Trail we heard eight calling and glimpsed three. The number and diversity of other bird species were low, not surprising considering the weather! Still, we enjoyed it.
