Report - Brindabellas (Sun 21 January 2001)

A party of about 15 COG members assembled at Uriarra Homestead and took in the view of the dam. We stayed there for about 20 minutes and saw amongst other things, a Latham’s Snipe and a Black-fronted Dotterel. It gave us a lovely display and everyone was able to get a good look. We then car-pooled for the trip to Blundell’s Creek Road. It had promised to be a very hot day at home, but in the Brindabellas it was considerably cooler, assisted by an occasional spot of rain. At one stage it threatened to really rain, but Phil and I put our raincoats on and then of course it stopped! We ambled down the slope at a comfortable pace, arriving at our lunch spot at midday. On the way we heard Pilotbirds and we spent some time in the gully where Bruce had seen them before, but they eluded us. We also heard Lyrebirds quite close to us but not surprisingly we didn’t see them with such a large party.

After lunch break we leisurely returned to the top of the hill. There were still quite a few birds active but the Pilotbirds still didn’t show themselves. Fifty-six species were recorded all up—29 at Uriarra Homestead and dam and 34 on Blundell’s Creek Road:
