The traditional outing to witness the autumn migration of honeyeaters was held in conjunction with the second honeyeater survey morning. Eight COG members visited the premier survey site near Angle Crossing, however the overcast weather meant that very few honeyeaters were moving, even at this site where thousands usually pass through on a good day. A few flocks of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters were seen during the first hour, demonstrating the typical migration flight and calls.
The outing moved on to the Tharwa Sandwash, often another good site to observe honeyeater migration. However it was the wealth of other bird species that were of interest here. In particular a pair of Brown Treecreepers sat on the ground outside a wombat burrow on the far (northern) side of the Murrumbidgee River, giving us lengthy if distant views. Other highlights included Restless Flycatcher, Diamond Firetail, Black-fronted Dotterel and Dusky Woodswallow.
