Campbell Park; Sunday 11 May - COG Database and Atlas Demonstration

Recently a number of members have asked, for example on the COG E-mail discussion list, how do they ensure that the important sightings they make are properly entered into the COG records? This may be coupled to rumours that the COG database project, or at least the Birds Australia Atlas, is over. Despite the lower recent publicity for both this is far from the truth, and this morning outing has been designed to both refresh old skills as well as teach them to newer members who are interested in ensuring that their important bird sightings are preserved for posterity. The session will cater for the various levels of interests in recording birds, from those who may want to lodge only the occasional interesting incidental observation, to those who are looking to become more regular atlassers.

The morning will involve a demonstration of the various forms COG uses, how to fill these in, how to estimate the size of the area with which they are associated, some basic skills in recording your position accurately from a map and how to use a GPS. This will comprise of a short presentation, followed some practical exercises. There will also be some time for bird watching. To register your interest please contact COG’s Records Officer Nicki Taws (Ph 6251 0303, or email ntaws@austarmetro.com.au) or Jack Holland on (6288 7840 AH) or email jack.holland@ea.gov.au) Meet at 9 am the picnic tables in the car park.
